Baldwin Grand Pianos - American Quality and History

In the United States, when looking for a perfect grand piano, it's worth paying attention to Baldwin instruments. We present several fascinating facts about the history, quality, and various models of grand pianos from this renowned company.

The Baldwin brand was founded by Dwight Hamilton Baldwin, an American teacher of violin and organ, who ran his music shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the largest piano dealer in the Midwestern United States.

With a passion for exceptional instruments, Baldwin decided to produce his own pianos, which appeared on the market in 1891, and four years later, grand pianos were added to the lineup, created in collaboration with John Macy. Unfortunately, a year after introducing the grand pianos, Dwight Baldwin passed away. His posthumously awarded grand piano won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition, contributing to the brand's recognition among concert artists.

Since 1901, Lucien Wulsin, a collaborator of Baldwin, took over the company, starting to export Baldwin pianos to 32 countries worldwide. The quality of these instruments was once again appreciated, this time in London. The company survived the Great Depression and even during World War II, it was involved in the production of aircraft components. Baldwin remained in the Wulsin family, with Lucien's son and grandson leading the company in the following years. The brand gained recognition from many composers, pianists, and even the President of the United States, Harry Truman.

In 2001, Baldwin was acquired by Gibson Guitar Corp. from Nashville, Tennessee. The production of Baldwins was moved to a Chinese factory opened by Gibson in 2006. Since 2011, North American Music has been the exclusive distributor of American Baldwin pianos.
