Although the European market for upright and grand pianos may be particularly associated with countries such as Germany or Italy, one of the leading piano manufactures is located a little further east. We are talking about the wonderful Petrof instruments, which have been produced for over 150 years in the Czech Republic.
The founder and creator of the first Petrof piano was Antonin Petrof - it happened in 1864. Earlier, he studied and watched the work of craftsmen working in the factories in Vienna to start his own business soon. Initially, Antonin Petrof created instruments in his father's workshop. The production functioned in this way for a short period of time when production was interrupted by the Austro-Prussian War for a few more years.
Petrof resumed its activity in 1874 and the factory was moved to Brno. Soon, in addition to grand pianos (and harmoniums), production also included Petrof upright pianos. The company's range gradually and continuously expanded and Petrof companies were established in Hungary and Vienna. Antonin was joined by three sons, who took over the company in 1915, when their father and mother died in an accident. Another branch was established in London with the legendary Steinway & Sons brand, and piano production also included electronic and radio-acoustic systems. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the Petrof factory was nationalized for many years and did fully return to the primitive hands of the Petrof family in 2001 (10 years earlier Jan Petrof had already taken over the management). An important part of the brand's activity is investment in development, innovation and research - for this purpose, among others, the Development Department and later a modern Development Centre was created. Currently, the Petrof factory operates in Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic, and has its branch also in the United States. So we can say that these European upright and grand pianos are available on every continent and their quality is highly appreciated (the Petrof factory has won prestigious awards in Europe and worldwide over the years). They are also awarded the title of the European Certificate of Excellence, which proves the exceptional quality of materials. An important element of the factory is the chamber for testing the acoustic properties of instruments.
To this day, most of the work in the Petrof factory is done by hand, and it starts with detailed selection and processing of raw wood.
Let's take a look at what models are currently coming out of the Petrof factory (the numbers in the name refer to the height in cm for the upright piano or the length in cm for the grand piano):
P135 (53”), P131 (51”), P125 (49”), P122 (48”), P118 (46,5”)
P284 Mistral (9’2), P237 Monsoon (7’9), P210 Pasat (6’11), P194 Storm (6’3), P173 Breeze (5’8), P159 Bora (5’2).
You can also buy unique models of upright and grand pianos from the Style Collection and Special Collection, and 3 models of instruments from the new premium Ant. Petrof. These are 2 concert pianos - Ant. Petrof 275 and 225, and an Ant. Petrof 136.
Interestingly, the Petrof factory not only produces instruments of this brand. It also produces Rösler, Scholze, Weinbach, Fibich and Akord pianos.
To appreciate the value of Petrof instruments, it is certainly best to listen to their beautiful live sound! These are upright and grand pianos made from the highest quality materials. On average, the time to produce one instrument is several months. Those interested have the opportunity to visit the Petrof museum, where the secrets of production are revealed before their eyes. One of the key patents introduced by Petrof is the MAA (Magnetically Accelerated Action) mechanism.
Not everyone realizes that if we compare the European Petrof piano with an American Steinway or Asian Kawai instrument, we will get a completely different sound. This is due to the differences in the construction of these instruments and different materials. Although the "outside" pianos of other brands do not differ much, the whole secret is hidden in the mechanism and acoustics. European pianos usually have a sound called round, romantic - but it is a challenge to describe it in words.
As far as the Petrof piano price is concerned, it will depend on the model and condition of such an instrument. It is best to search for prices on the official dealer website, or browse the wide range of Petrof upright and grand pianos available on the Klaviano search engine. The year of manufacture is closely related to the instrument's serial number (which should be on the instrument's frame), so this Petrof piano serial number reference information list may be helpful:
