Bosendorfer
When considering a grand piano, the differences between say a Bösendorfer and Steinway are significant. For instance, while a Steinway takes approximately one year to build, a Bösendorfer requires six years. This extended timeframe is largely due to Bösendorfer's commitment to naturally seasoning and drying their spruce wood without the use of kilns. Additionally, Bösendorfer pianos are entirely handcrafted, whereas Steinway incorporates some CNC machinery and CAD technology in their production process.
Bösendorfer excels in the materials used for their grand piano rims and bracings, sourcing the finest naturally dried spruce. In contrast, Steinway opts for laminated poplar wood.
In terms of production volume, Steinway manufactures around 2,500 pianos globally each year, while Bösendorfer produces only 300, making the latter an exceptionally rare find.
Since its acquisition by Yamaha in 2008, Bösendorfer has maintained its traditional factory practices. Notably, Bösendorfer employs single stringing and eyes, unlike Steinway's double strings, which helps eliminate false tuning notes.
A unique feature of Bösendorfer is the adjustable Capo D’Astro bar, allowing for increased downforce over time to enhance tonal resonance. This offers a clear visual representation of the thought, time, and meticulous engineering for which Bösendorfer is renowned. Conversely, Steinway’s Capo D’Astro bar is fixed during the casting process, a standard practice among many piano manufacturers.
