Beschreibung
1924 Steinway & Sons Model V (Vertegrand) — Hamburg, Art Déco Cabinet
A rare 1924 Steinway & Sons Model V upright piano, manufactured at the prestigious Hamburg factory. Serial number 227647 confirms production during Steinway's most celebrated era, when the founding family still oversaw craftsmanship and materials were sourced to the highest standards.
What makes this instrument exceptional is its Art Déco cabinet. Finished in French-polished walnut and mahogany, the front panel features an original openwork lattice design backed by silk — a decorative feature found only on luxury special-order instruments of the period. This is not a standard black upright; it is a rare piece of 1920s decorative art built around a world-class musical instrument.
The piano comes with its original matching bench, crafted from the same wood, forming a complete Art Déco set.
SOUND & PLAYABILITY
A recent technical assessment confirms remarkable performance for a 100-year-old instrument. The tone is characteristically European Steinway — warm, rich, and balanced, with deep bass and crystalline treble clarity. It avoids the harsh metallic brightness of many modern pianos, offering the "singing" quality that Hamburg Steinways of this era are celebrated for. Sound demonstration: https://youtu.be/XxjmaRZwPaU
MECHANICAL CONDITION
Hammers and felts are in excellent condition with precise dynamic response and sensitive touch. The soundboard is intact and well-preserved. The pinblock maintains correct pressure on the tuning pins, resulting in strong tuning stability. The Cupola Self-Compression cast iron frame is in excellent condition. All components are original except the keytops, which were replaced with modern material when the piano was shipped from Brazil to Portugal due to ivory export regulations. No CITES restrictions apply.
