Description
1924 Steinway & Sons Model V (Vertegrand) — Hamburg factory, serial no. 227647.
This is an uncommon V-125 upright presented in an original Art Déco cabinet, finished in French-polished walnut and mahogany. The front panel retains its original openwork lattice with silk backing, a decorative detail reserved for bespoke, high-end orders of the period. The piano is offered together with its matching bench, crafted from the same woods to form a coherent Art Déco set.
Sound and playability
Despite its age, the instrument delivers the characteristic Hamburg Steinway voice: a warm, singing timbre with substantial low end and clear, well-defined treble. The dynamic range is responsive and musical, avoiding the thin metallic edge found on many modern uprights.
Mechanical condition
Recent technical assessment reports strong mechanical integrity for a nearly century-old instrument. Hammers and felts present good condition and react responsively across dynamics. The soundboard is intact and well preserved; the pinblock holds correct pressure on the tuning pins, supporting stable tuning. The Cupola Self-Compression cast iron frame is in excellent condition. Action follows the original Renner Hamburg specification. All visible components are original except for the keytops, which were replaced with modern, non-ivory material when the piano was transported from Brazil to Portugal in compliance with export rules. No CITES restrictions apply.
