Description
A Gaveau baby grand in Art Deco splendor (France, 1934)
This exceptional Gaveau baby grand was made in France in 1934, at the height of the Art Deco era — a period marked by elegance, innovation and impeccable craftsmanship. Compact in size yet rich in presence, this instrument embodies the refined luxury and architectural clarity that made French piano making world-famous.
Gaveau, one of the most prestigious Parisian piano makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was known for its exacting construction standards and exclusive use of high-quality materials. This instrument is no exception: every element reflects the brand’s commitment to tonal depth, durability and aesthetic distinction.
The case was designed by the renowned Parisian designer Dominique, a leading figure in Art Deco furniture design. His unmistakable style — characterised by balanced proportions, subtle geometry and restrained refinement — gives this instrument a sculptural quality that transcends its function as a musical instrument. During the recent, thorough restoration, the case was expertly hand-polished in the workshop, restoring the original finish and producing a warm, natural and organic appearance that enhances the character of the wood and the purity of the design.
The case is executed in carefully selected walnut veneer, contrasted with interior parts of maple. The finish employs a traditional hand-applied French polish, emphasising the natural depth and elegance of the wood in true Art Deco tradition.
The technical restoration was carried out with equal care and expertise. New strings and tuning pins have been fitted, restoring structural reliability and tuning stability. Despite the modest dimensions of the resonance case and soundboard, the piano now delivers a surprisingly full, powerful and expressive tone — clear in articulation, rich in colour and well balanced across the registers. It is a convincing example of how intelligent design and masterful craftsmanship can transcend physical scale.
This Gaveau baby grand is more than an instrument: it is a piece of musical and decorative history, equally at home in an elegant interior, a design-conscious space or in the hands of a demanding pianist who values both sound and heritage.
