Steinway & Sons O-180 — new action and restoration

CASE
The piano case has been finished with Italian polyester lacquer in deep black. Selected elements — the large underside lid, the lid support strip, the support, the binding and the inner side of the fallboard — received clear Italian polyester lacquer of the highest quality. Additionally, decorative veneers were applied; the walnut veneer used gives the instrument its characteristic appearance.

ACOUSTIC SECTION
The soundboard underwent a comprehensive restoration and was then protected with Italian lacquer. New bridge caps for the bass and treble bridges were made, profiled in four stages from selected beech wood, which improves vibration transfer and intonation precision. Strings from renowned manufacturers were installed — Heller bass strings and Roslau treble strings — individually scaled based on precise measurements. A new five-layer pinblock made of hard, tight-grained maple was installed, increasing drilling stability and improving the durability of the tuning. The cast-iron frame was restored and protected with a suitably chosen lacquer.

MECHANICAL SECTION
The instrument is equipped with an original, complete, new Steinway & Sons action, providing high control over dynamics and quick keyboard response. The keyboard was professionally restored using original Steinway components. The white keytops were replaced with new ones made of Kluge Ivoplast material. The action was precisely regulated together with the keyboard.

TUNING AND CONTROL
After the restoration, the instrument underwent a cycle of eight tunings and intonations performed by a certified technician, which made it possible to achieve stable tuning and optimal hammer setting.
