Baldwin Grand Pianos - American Quality and History

In the United States, when looking for a perfect grand piano, it's worth paying attention to Baldwin instruments. We present several fascinating facts about the history, quality, and various models of grand pianos from this renowned company.

The Baldwin brand was founded by Dwight Hamilton Baldwin, an American teacher of violin and organ, who ran his music shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the largest piano dealer in the Midwestern United States.

With a passion for exceptional instruments, Baldwin decided to produce his own pianos, which appeared on the market in 1891, and four years later, grand pianos were added to the lineup, created in collaboration with John Macy. Unfortunately, a year after introducing the grand pianos, Dwight Baldwin passed away. His posthumously awarded grand piano won the Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition, contributing to the brand's recognition among concert artists.

Since 1901, Lucien Wulsin, a collaborator of Baldwin, took over the company, starting to export Baldwin pianos to 32 countries worldwide. The quality of these instruments was once again appreciated, this time in London. The company survived the Great Depression and even during World War II, it was involved in the production of aircraft components. Baldwin remained in the Wulsin family, with Lucien's son and grandson leading the company in the following years. The brand gained recognition from many composers, pianists, and even the President of the United States, Harry Truman.

In 2001, Baldwin was acquired by Gibson Guitar Corp. from Nashville, Tennessee. The production of Baldwins was moved to a Chinese factory opened by Gibson in 2006. Since 2011, North American Music has been the exclusive distributor of American Baldwin pianos.

Top Models of Baldwin Grand Pianos

The Baldwin factory offers beautiful grand pianos that will undoubtedly delight enthusiasts of American grandeur with their artistic qualities. Undoubtedly, Baldwin grand pianos are among the best-selling in the United States. The smallest of the grand pianos offered by this brand is the Model M, with a length of 5'2" (158 cm). Also available is the Artist Grand Model R, which is 5'8" long (173 cm), as well as semi-concert grand pianos with very similar dimensions: Artist Grand Model 227 and Artist Grand Model 226.

Another available model is the Artist Grand Model L, a cabinet grand piano presenting a more robust sound than its predecessors due to its larger size - 6'3" in length (191 cm). Baldwin also offers the semi-concert Artist Grand Model SF10 with a length of 213 cm (7') and the concert grand with a length of 9' (274 cm) Artist Grand Model SD10, which is size-wise very close to the Steinway D.

Why Buy a Baldwin Grand Piano?

If you are looking for a perfect piano or grand piano from Baldwin, it's worth considering the secondary market, especially in the United States, where this brand is extremely popular. These instruments are available at significantly lower prices than new models from this manufacturer.

Before making a purchase decision, we recommend thoroughly reviewing the available offers. When choosing from private sellers and professional dealers offering Baldwin grand pianos, it is better to lean towards purchases in reputable stores. There, you can meet specialists who will help you determine the value of the instrument and learn about its history and serial number. Additionally, such experts will provide professional services, including tuning and repairs that may be needed for a particular instrument.

Buying a Baldwin grand piano on the secondary market can be an excellent solution, allowing you to save money while maintaining high quality. However, remember to carefully examine the offers to ensure that you choose the right instrument that meets your expectations and provides excellent sound for many years.
