Baldwin - American upright and grand pianos

When looking for a piano, especially in the United States, you can find Baldwin instruments. When wondering if these are upright or grand pianos worthy of attention, we will give you some facts about their history, quality and models.

The Baldwin brand was launched by Dwight Hamilton Baldwin, an American violin and organ teacher who ran his music shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, which at the time he was the largest piano salesman in the Midwestern United States. Over time, Baldwin wanted to produce his own quality instruments himself, starting with the upright piano, which was available since 1891, and four years later, a grand piano in cooperation with John Macy, which was sold in Cincinnati, joined the range. Unfortunately one year later Dwight Hamilton Baldwin dies and his piano is posthumously awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris exhibition, which made the brand also recognised among piano producers offering grand pianos to concert artists. From 1901, Lucien Wulsin, who had previously worked with Baldwin, starts managing Baldwin and soon begins exporting Baldwin upright and grand pianos to 32 countries around the world, and the quality of these instruments is again appreciated this time in London. The factory has survived a great crisis, and during World War II it was also used to build aircraft elements. Lucien Wulsin was followed by his son and grandson, who continued to run the Baldwin factory. The Baldwin brand is appreciated by many composers, pianists as well as the previous American President Harry Truman.

In 2001, Baldwin was appointed by Gibson Guitar Corp. of Nashville, Tennessee. Since 2006 Baldwin’s production is located in a Chinese factory, opened by Gibson. Since 2011 North American Music becomes the exclusive distributor of American Baldwin pianos.

What upright piano models does Baldwin offer?

Like other piano manufacturers, Baldwin offers pianos in a variety of finishes, not only in high gloss black but also in walnut or mahogany or cherry wood. The prices of new Baldwin pianos range from almost $10,000 to just over $14,000 depending on the finish and model of the piano. The available models of Baldwin pianos are BP1, B342, B442, B243, studio pianos BP3, BP5, BPX5 and concert pianos B252. Used pianos are also available on the U.S. market in particular for those on a smaller budget, they give the chance to enjoy the quality of these renowned instruments. Baldwin also offers a range of decorative pianos with a so-called console, which there are exactly two models of: Baldwin B342 Acrosonic and Baldwin B442 Acrosonic.

Is it worth buying a Baldwin piano?

The Baldwin factory also offers beautiful pianos, which will surely satisfy the enthusiasts with their artistic qualities. Undoubtedly, Baldwin pianos are one of the best selling in the United States. The smallest available pianos of this brand is the M model, which is 5’2" or 158 cm long. The Artist Grand Model R is also available, which is 173 cm long, or 5’8", and with the same dimensions, the Artist Grand Model 227 and Artist Grand Model 226. Another of the available models is the Artist Grand Model L, which presents a stronger tone of sound than its predecessors as it is larger, 6’3" and in centimetres it’s as much as 191 cm long. Baldwin also offers the 213 cm long semi-concert Artist Grand Model SF10, which is 7’ long, and the 9’ long Artist Grand Model SD10, which is identical in size to the Steinway D.

On the aftermarket you can also find Baldwin upright and grand pianos especially in the USA, as this brand is very popular there, and they will be at much lower prices than the new instruments of this manufacturer. We recommend that you look carefully at the offers, and those who want to choose among those offered by private sellers and professional sellers offering these instruments, we recommend to shop in stores, where you can also meet specialists who will make you aware of how much a given Baldwin is worth and what its history or serial number is, they will also provide professional service such as tuning or smaller repairs that a given instrument will require.
