Hallet, Davis & Company is one of the oldest American piano manufacturers, located in Boston, Massachusetts. It was founded before the establishment of legendary brands like Steinway & Sons, Mason & Hamlin, and Baldwin. Initially, the company was named "Brown & Hallet" (1833), but in 1843, after one of the founders retired, the name was changed to "Hallet & Cumston". Four years later, the company changed ownership and was renamed "Hallet & Davis".
Around 1880, the name Hallet, Davis & Co. was revived. During that time, massive, carved, and exclusive square pianos were very popular, examples of which can be found in archival catalogs. Pianos from the late 19th and early 20th centuries were known for their solid construction and rich decorations. In November 1925, the Hallet & Davis Piano Company was acquired by the Premier Grand Corporation of New York. Following the Great Depression, it became part of the Aeolian - American Corporation. The company operated until 1985, and since the 1990s, it has been managed by North American Music Company, producing pianos in China (for some time also in Korea by Samick).
American-made Hallet & Davis pianos are valued for their robustness and high quality. They were appreciated by musicians and composers, including renowned artists like Franz Liszt and Johann Strauss. Due to their superior quality, these upright and grand pianos can be renovated and maintain their splendor for many years. Contemporary Hallet & Davis pianos are quite different from the original American models. They are mass-produced in large Chinese factories, although manufacturers strive to continually improve quality using the best possible components, including European ones.
